Especially in the times of the pandemic, staying on task can be tricky. Dr. Ileana Berman offers up some cognitive science research-backed tips on how to stay focused:
Work on Projects in a Designated Area
Making space for your work is imperative! When you have a limited physical workspace, your mental workspace becomes limited as well. If you can avoid it, opt out of working in the kitchen or living room. While working from home, Dr. Berman suggests creating your own little work nook. (Protip: repurposing an area in your garage or basement!)
Eliminate Your Distractions
Multitasking sets you on a fast track to distractions that will overwhelm you. When you’re overwhelmed and distracted, it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to focus! Cognitive Science Researchers specifically recommend that you avoid multitasking. Instead, dedicate all of your focus to one project or task at a time. The quality of your work will thank you!
